Primary education in Uganda spans seven years of primary schooling, with children entering school at the average age of six. As the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) records indicate, school enrollments experienced remarkable growth from three million in 1997 to 5.3 million. By 2004, the number had further surged to an impressive seven million students eager to learn.
As students’ progress through their primary education, they reach a crucial milestone of sitting for Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
PLE assesses students in four examinable subjects: English, mathematics, science, and social studies.

Scores on the PLE range from four (a distinction in each subject) to 36 (a fail with nine points per subject). Candidates who score between four and twelve receive a first-grade distinction, division one. Those scoring between 13 and 23 obtain a second grade, while a third grade is awarded to students who score between 24 and 29. Finally, a fourth grade is given to students scoring between 30 and 36.
